Wayback Wednesday: Maynard Ferguson – Birdland

Maynard Ferguson’s reimagination of my favorite jazz standard is a perfect way to kick off Wayback Wednesday here on Adrenalize Irregular. I didn’t feel too guilty quelling my savagely pathetic percussionist urge to post Buddy Rich’s version; I figured everyone could do without his blisteringly fast single-note snare rolls and his inimitable exploitation of the standard drum kit…in favor of the harmonically enriched, showtime anthem conjured by Mr. Ferguson and his contemporaries. It doesn’t play like a typical jazz standard, teeming with interminable self-indulgent solos, but is rather formatted as a progression of collaborated riffs, called and answered upon between different members of the entire ensemble.
